Educational Materials Help Small Businesses Bounce Back from COVID-19
LiftFund’s Women’s Business Center of Dallas received a grant through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to develop a program to help minority-owned small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With a limited budget, an extremely tight timelineand tall order of materials needed, LiftFund turned to Writing by Design for help.
Through the project management and creative support of Writing by Design, LiftFund’s Women’s Business Center of Dallas was able to launch its COVID-19 Business Relief Program in the summer of 2020 and help minority and women-owned small businesses in the Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio areas. Program participants learned how to bounce back from the impact of COVID-19 through educational videos, a variety of supplemental reading and evaluation materials, one-on-one business planning sessions and an emotional support group. In less than two months, Writing by Design delivered eight bilingual training videos with accompanying handouts, eight tip sheets, a 24-page survival guide, an awareness-building explainer video and promotional flyer.
PPT Template and Training Videos
Over the course of two months, the Writing by Design team spent hundreds of hours animating and producing eight 20–30-minute educational training videos on topics ranging from supply chain to IT. To help keep costs down and within budget, the videos were developed and animated in Microsoft PowerPoint, and included a professional voiceover and Spanish subtitles.
Handouts and Tip Sheets
Eight subject matter experts provided content for the videos, as well as supporting handouts and tip sheets for program participants to evaluate themselves and make adjustments to their supply chain, IT, marketing, customer service and other business processes. Writing by Design edited the copy, designed the materials and worked with a translation partner to provide handouts and tip sheets in both English and Spanish.
From knowing when it’s time to close a small business to how to strengthen a business through strategic
planning, a SWOT analysis and more, Writing by Design used its own experience as a small business to develop relevant, useful copy and design an interactive business survival guide flipbook.
In addition to the educational materials and resources developed to aid program participants, the Women’s Business Center also needed a way to tell potential applicants about the program. Through the use of a powerful script, illustrations, PowerPoint and a professional voiceover, Writing by Design developed an animated explainer video for use on social media and to advertise the program. In addition, a bilingual digital flyer promoting the program was developed for the Women’s Business Center to share with its partners.
