A word about… ghost writing that masqueraded for a cause.

Despite its eerie name, ghost writing has nothing to do with handwriting on the wall or scary campfire stories. Writing by Design offers a range of services referred to as ghost writing, from writing eBlasts and blog posts to speeches and annual reports. What these tasks have in common is no mystery, either: they’re time consuming. Business can get busy, and sometimes clients need a helping hand—invisible or otherwise—with their writing needs.

This was the case when St. Mary Catholic Schools (formerly the Twin City Catholic Education System) asked Writing by Design to write eBlasts for its annual fundraising gala, Zephyrfest, for the third year in a row. St. Mary Catholic High School has been relying on Zephyrfest for educational funding for thirty years and felt it was time to bring the event’s marketing online. With a small team in charge of planning every detail of the annual event, however, there were not enough hours in a day to keep up with the writing needs so they reached out to Writing by Design for support.

Unmasking the Zephyrfest mission.

Because Zephyrfest is such an essential fundraiser for the school system, communications for this event were about more than just getting the word out. In the space of a few emails, Writing by Design had to use rich, enticing language to sell the mission of St. Mary Catholic Schools to potential donors—all while promoting this year’s masquerade theme.

Event Coordinator, Robin Gallucci, said Writing by Design has played an integral role in sharing what the event is all about. “Every communication Writing by Design created for Zephyrfest showcased who we are,” she explained. “The writing was always crisp, clean, smart and enticing and kept our sponsors, donors and guests excited to see what was coming next.”

In the end, the goal was to keep attendees pondering raffle and auction items so they’d arrive ready to unveil their bidding paddles during the auction. This required strategic timing, catchy, themed writing and compelling calls to action. In addition to providing copy, Writing by Design also helped keep an eye on click-through rates on Constant Contact, modifying and improving copy each week to increase engagement with the eBlasts.

And… the results were no mystery.

According to Gallucci, Zephyrfest saw an increase in interest from each of its key groups over the past three years as a result of our eBlasts. “These communications would have taken too many hours to accomplish with our small team,” she added. “With very little direction, Writing by Design was able to convey the essence of Zephyrfest in a short turn-around time. We could not have accomplished this without their fabulous services and extremely talented staff.”

 With the money from Zephyrfest supporting educational initiatives, Writing by Design was more than happy to play a phantom role, providing “writing that sells” for this enchanting evening.
